Are Drain Cleaners Safe?
IMPORTANT SAFETY TIPS FOR USING CHEMICAL DRAIN CLEANERS
Risks and Dangers with Chemical Drain Cleaners
Chemical drain cleaners are useful to remove all sorts of hard clogs. With these substances, though, there are a number of risks and dangers to clear the drains. Many of these chemicals emit harsh fumes which, if inhaled, can be harmful. If they come into contact with your skin, many can burn and leaves a scar. And if not properly used, they can damage furniture, walls, cabinets... even your own pipes. The following tips will help you to safely use these drain cleaners.
Avoid the Most Harmful Cleaners
Most declogging agents with chemical drain use lye or acid. Not only are these harsh chemicals detrimental to your skin, they can also contaminate waste water and destroy the piping of PVC. If you need to use an acid or lye cleaner, be sure to wear a protective mask and gloves. Ventilate the room as much as possible and store it properly (in a high cabinet so children won’t be able to reach it) when finished.
Always Read the Label
Not all drain cleaners are created equally and may cause major problems by using the wrong cleaner. Some cleaners may eat your pipes, some may harm your septic system, and some may cause severe burns when they come into contact with your skin. Read the label thoroughly before using a cleaner to make sure the cleaner is safe for your intended use. You will also want to search for any safety and cleanup label recommendations in the event of an accidental spill.
Prevent Clog Build-Up
Do your best to keep grease and debris out of your drains and don't have to rely on a chemical drain cleaner to avoid clogs as often as possible. You will also reduce unpleasant odors and make your pipes work better. A simple solution of salt water, poured down the drain every few weeks, will flush grease out and remove odors from showers, sinks and garbage disposal.
Consider These Drain Cleaning Alternatives
Harsh chemical cleaners is not the only tool you need to repair a blocked drain. Since it has potentially harmful side effects, there are several alternatives that you can choose to use which is also as effective as the chemical cleaner, but minus the health risk.
A sewage jetter sprays down your drains, easily and with no harsh chemicals, a customizable, high-pressure stream of water. There is no risk of pipes or fixtures being destroyed or contaminating your home with noxious fumes because you use water only. A sewer jetter can be purchased at most plumbing supply stores, or large home improvement warehouses. Make sure to read the directions thoroughly before using them.
There are also plenty of cleaning methods for natural draining. Plain baking soda and white vinegar is one of the most common methods to use. Next, clear any water in or around the drain in the bath. Pour into the drain around 1⁄2 cup of ordinary baking soda, followed by 1⁄2 cup of vinegar. Within the pipes, the two substances would react, dissolving clogs and allowing water to flow again freely. To clear the clog, you can repeat these steps as many times as you need. While the scent of vinegar may not be the most appealing, it is definitely non-toxic and much better than any harsh chemical drain cleaner for your plumbing purposes.
