The Stockton Field Aviation Museum (SFAM) is a non-profit, all-voluntary organization whose mission is to give the public a better appreciation of the history of America's Second World Aviation, including the people who designed, built, maintained, prepared and flew the aircraft of our nation's greatest generation. Their passion is to preserve the equipment, stories and technical information of that time, and to make it available to the public through the hands-on events of living history. They focus not only on Stockton Field, but on all of our country's Second World War training fields and military aviation heritage.

Companion is one of the reasons that makes people volunteer in the museum. They want to spend time with others who share our passions and interests. Volunteering is building friendships. It brings together people who would otherwise never meet, a lot less work together.

Another very important personal reason for volunteering is networking. This is a term that means meeting people who may be beneficial to you in the future, and vice versa. SFAM volunteering brings together people from all walks of life and professions. You'll get to know people who can help and offer advice from an unimaginably vast array of professions and industries.

Personal education is another major benefit of volunteering. You learn to do your volunteer work, of course, but you also work alongside people who have a wealth of knowledge and personal experience that they share with you. Of course, an SFAM volunteer learns about all aspects of aviation, but because of the diversity of our volunteer corps, you may spend your time with anyone from a rocket scientist — no joke, we have them — to an investment banker, a welder, a computer security expert. I guarantee that SFAM volunteers come from all walks of life and have been successful in a wide range of professions.

Perhaps most important of all, volunteering instills in your life invaluable meaning. The accomplishment of any task that helps others also helps us to feel fulfilled and valued. The SFAM volunteers who paint the buildings on our grounds can stand back and think, "I did that." When a volunteer on the line crew looks down the perfectly straight rows of parked aircraft, it's satisfying in a way that much of the rest of our lives is never there.
