The Stockton Opera and Guild helps take an ongoing opera performance to the Stockton society every summer through a sequence of cultural and fund-raising activities. The Guild is also organizing and funding the Stockton Opera Guild-Kathe Underwood Scholarship Competition, which offers economic prizes for aspiring youthful performers planning to explore opera. The Stockton Opera Guild serves as opera agents, promoting fresh and aged colleagues to arrive and enjoy the weekly production of the Opera and other musical activities.

Warren and Marietta Atherton had a vision in 1968 of adding to the Stockton Community opera performances. Former Stockton Symphony Director, Kyung Soo Won, Dr. Arthur Holton, Stockton Chorale's creator and long-time director, and Dr. Lucas Underwood communicated this view, and the Stockton Opera Association was established along with the concern and help of the society. The first full-scale production, La Traviata was presented in April of 1969. Lucas Underwood was the director and driver.

We are proud of the achievements of our artistic directors whose strategy and energy have greatly added to the Stockton Opera Association's development and vitality. Dr. Lucas Underwood, Mark Ross Clark, and Professor Emeritus George Buckbee each created stimulating light and grand opera productions, professional in quality and strong in musical and theatrical values over the years.

The Stockton Opera regularly has productions at the Faye Spanos Conert Hall athe the University of the Pacific.

Opera is a form of theater in which music has a leading role and parts are taken by singers, but is distinct from musical theatre. Such a "work" (the literal translation of the Italian word "opera") is typically a collaboration between a composer and a librettist and incorporates a number of performing arts such as acting, scenery, costumes, and sometimes dance or ballet. Typically, the play is performed in an opera house, followed by an orchestra or a narrower musical ensemble, guided by a conductor since the mid 19th millennium.

In 2000, the Stockton Opera Guild started to award scholarships. Besides money prizes, recipients are encouraged throughout the year to participate in the activities of the Stockton Opera Guild.
