Quacker Lake, 1100-1298, American St, Stockton, CA 95202, United States
A lake is a water-filled zone, located in a basin, surrounded by land, except for any river or other drainage point that feeds or drains the lake. Lakes lie on land and are not part of the sea, therefore distinct from lagoons and are also wider and deeper than ponds, although no official or scientific definitions exist. The lakes can be compared with flowing rivers or streams. The majority of lakes are fed and drained by streams and rivers.
Natural lakes can generally be found in mountainous areas, rift areas and permanently glaciated areas. Other lakes are located in endorheic basins or along mature river courses. There are many lakes in some parts of the world owing to the unstable drainage patterns left from the last ice age. Both lakes will be temporary over geological time scales as sediments are slowly drained or deposited out of the underlying basin.
Many lakes are man-made and built for industrial or agricultural use, generation of hydroelectric energy, household water, aesthetics, leisure or other activities.
Why You Should Visit A Lake
Connecting with nature can be an excellent way of linking with your others and/or children and an even better way of appreciating the world around you. There are three reasons why your next holiday should be at a lake. Don't forget your suits for swimming!
Everyone sometimes gets a bit overwhelmed by urban life: we spend most of our time on our computers or on our smartphones or try to move through polluting, clogged city streets. The ideal remedy for this is a lake holiday, because most lakes are set in fields or forests surrounded by trees and very few people. You can breathe fresh, cleaner air, swim or fish in the water or just relax on the waterfront chair and enjoy being away from the heat of daily life.
However, nature can have the opposite effect. These same findings have shown that only seeing a tree from a hospital window will help speed up healing after an accident or procedure, and that people can better concentrate when they see some kind of nature in the neighbourhood. If it takes one tree to make you feel better and relax, just imagine what you could do by spending a couple of days near a lake!
